Reality TV on NTV7 this July on Udang Galah
I have got an update from a friend and at the same time the contestant for a reality tv programme that will be air at NTV7 Malaysia on 7 July 2010.
The genre about the same as the Apprentice, with the major sponsors is DIGI.
The unique matter that I salute this contestant is, he is proposing for FRESH WATER PRAWN PROJECTS!!! Brave... and the udang galah industry will be on TV not just Astro. More media coverage means more exposure to the masses.
If he wins, better for us. The government and the banks sure will support the grower from now on yeah...
SMS FOR HIM. VOTE FOR HIM. SHOW YOUR SUPPORT LAH
Good luck Razi (ex trueaqua marketing man)
UPDATE:
He is nervous but he got good airtime lol, I think a full minute, free exposure, pakai seluwau pendek lagi, lepak tepi kolam, Nasty

Bank Loans Facilities from Agro Bank
I am planning to apply a loan from Agro Bank, Kota Tinggi Branch for RM 50,000 to develop my new udang galah ponds nearby Kota Tinggi, Johor.
The loan will only cover the costs of preparing the new 4 ponds (the land can accommodate 16 ponds), buying pumps, blowers, food pellets, and management costs for 5 months. My partner and I will fork 10k for the development.
Please remember that this loan is from the government scheme funds but you have to fit into the basic banking rules, either you have to produce guarantor or charge a physical collateral such as your land or house.
Why only 50k? Because the scheme offers:
Please check here for Commercial Loan with the bank.
Please also drop a visit to your nearest district branch because loan amounting less than RM 50,000 will be handle by the district branch, not the state office, but eventually they will table your application at their state level meetings. And remember to get some recommendation letters from the Penghulu, Village Head or your YB!
Hoping to get the approval soon..wish me luck

Supply of Udang Galah Post Larvae (PL)

It was fun doing what I do but writing here is a sure miss.
I would like to write about the supply of udang galah post larvae or PL. The size is so small, just over 2mm at average. First time I look at it, my thought was I will be loosing my money buying them.
But, they are strong and healthy after 5 months, fuhh!
In the West Malaysia, most suppliers are from the northern country (Perak and Kedah). They survive their business by waiting for orders before they start the breeding session. I do not have their full listings but few 'otai' growers do get their supplies from several suppliers.
I am in southern state so the nearest to me is Port Dickson, I do not remember his name but I think he already given his number in the live comments cbox.

You should not be afraid of the PL quality as long as the supplier are accredited by the fishery department. Please also consider receiving your prized PL at night and release them to your pond in the morning, this can increase the survival rate of your udang galah.
And remember to check whether you are buying the right food for your PL, it should be the fine granule! and the protein content is higher than the growing food.
Here some reference pictures from the internet.

main problem for our udang galah ventures is:
- not enough grower/ponds
- government/bank do not support start up
- supply of PL should be sufficient
- dedicated areas of areas/land for grower
- banks also do not know the income statistics
- land very expensive if near good location/hills with stream
- we do not have co-operation/koperasi penternak
because we busy get the money for capital initiation

My 1st freshwater prawn harvest
hi..I'm very tired and very excited when i have done my 1st harvest on Monday and Tuesday...
Conclusions:
Wow .. hope those who interested in farming the udang galah should experience the joy soonest, catch the big blue claw with your own hand and palms! lots of scrath marks on my palm cause by their claw and knife like horn.
Thank you God.
Conclusions:
- duration of stocks - 4 month 3 weeks
- size average - 60gm
- total weight - 100kg @ 15% mortality
- holding tanks should be wide and high supply of Dissolve Oxigen
- one day harvesting operations, not 2 preventing the prawn from molting
- bed of pond should be treated so harder surfaces at bottom
- plan and prepare earlier
- outlet pipe should be 2 or more
- 4 people to make sure smooth harvest
- nylon nets is more suitable
- grading the prawn to sizes when still in nets
- do not feed your stock 2 days prior harvest

- Treat the ponds with antivirus and antibacteria
- Make sure the water source is clean and maintain the cleanliness and hygiene throughout your activities
- Prepare for the worst
- Treat the water periodically and systematically

Pond Sizes
It been a while since I wrote here..its been very busy with the kids holidays and trying to make all my business plan a reality..
By the way, here some tips especially for the wannabe freshwater prawn grower :
I might change some of my udang galah business plan due to time factors and other business opportunity coming my way..but I will proceed with my existing ventures and will always write here in my blog..
By the way, here some tips especially for the wannabe freshwater prawn grower :
- Pond size - medium 50m x 50m or 30m x 60m, easier for harvesting
- dept - water depth 2-4ft
- bund - please allow 2-4ft above the water level
- bund sides - 25 to 45 degree angle, easier when harvesting and cleaning
- water outlet - 8 inch diameter UPVC pipes at the lowest point
- water inlet - 6 inch diameter UPVC pipes with some filters
- Main water channel/drain must provide enough volume for rainy season
- Allow 5-10 ft wide of common shared bunds - when the pond is side by side - for failsafe design and easy for you to manuver around your ponds
- lastly, please think of how you can channel your inlet water, either using pumps or gravity flow using dam/(empangan).
I might change some of my udang galah business plan due to time factors and other business opportunity coming my way..but I will proceed with my existing ventures and will always write here in my blog..

Venture Capital for start up farm
the second most FAQ is venture capital, how we could come up with sufficient money to develop our udang galah business/ponds..
main source of venture capital would be from:
please start small and record everything you spent/earn from the business by doing all your transaction by cheque, let the records show good income and profits/surplus, then, go apply for micro credit scheme!.
please check out my earlier post on locations and major points to consider when you decided to start up a freshwater prawn grow out business ..

Update on our new start up farm
its been awhile since i update progress on my udang galah business ventures...for a month now i have tried to secure a land in Negeri Sembilan for my mid term goal and its was tiring but INTERESTING...the deal is advancing as plan and hopefully i will secure the land before August....start-up capital partly from my savings and most of it from bank loan...
i am very grateful to God...the land got great water source, a bit far but still have a good access (potholes also got lah) no electricity but very near to last TNB pole...10 minutes to highway and 20 minutes to the nearest town...last 2 weeks i was at the land doing some clearing of scrubs and making good of the access....
what more to say, we will be having 8 of 50m x 50m freshwater prawn ponds, and hopefully we will first harvest lots of big fat prawn/shrimp by early next year....wish me luck
